Onsen Hot Bath Krea2 by Sarcastic TOFU

In Japan, Onsen are hot springs and the bathing facilities and traditional inns around them. Onsen may be either outdoor baths (Roten-Buro / Noten-Buro) or indoor baths (Uchiyu). The traditional white, lightweight, sheer towel commonly found in Japanese hot springs and public bathhouses is generally referred to simply as an Onsen Taoru (hot spring towel). Key characteristics of this towel include:Lightweight and Thin Weave: Unlike plush Western bath towels, these are intentionally thin (typically around 160 to 200 monme in traditional Japanese weight measurements, roughly 50 to 75 grams). This makes them dry remarkably fast and very easy to wring out after use. In Japanese bathing culture, it serves as a washcloth to scrub the body, a modesty cover when walking around the bathhouse, and a head wrap.

The Border Lines (Kaikiri): Many traditional white Onsen towels feature distinct colored stripes or woven borders near the ends. Historically, plain white all-pile towels looked identical, so manufacturers wove unique border patterns to distinguish their products. For Corporate/Facility branding they are frequently stamped or screen-printed directly on the border with the name, logo, or artistic design of the specific Onsen or Ryokan (traditional inn), turning them into functional souvenirs. Its historical predecessor is the Tenugui (a traditional, flat-woven cotton hand towel), and modern Onsen towels evolved as a hybrid that blends traditional thinness with modern loop-pile absorbency.
