🎯 Artistic Concept

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was an influential British art movement founded in 1848 by John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and William Holman Hunt . These young artists rebelled against Victorian academicism, seeking to return to the realism, meticulous detail, intense colors, and complex compositions typical of 15th-century Italian art before Raphael .

Distinctive Style Characteristics:

Artistic Clothing : Long, flowing medieval-inspired garments made from fine fabrics in natural colors, contrasting sharply with the rigid corsets and crinolines of mainstream Victorian fashion . Brotherhood members dressed their models in these medieval-inspired clothes, which were later adopted by the artists' wives and models as everyday attire .

Body and Posture : The Pre-Raphaelite body was depicted with almost theatrical realism, featuring poses inspired by acting and physical expressiveness . Figures show active musculature and studied postures designed to convey complex emotions and narratives .

The Pre-Raphaelite "Stunner" : The idealized Pre-Raphaelite woman, made famous by Rossetti, had a full neck, strong features, and flowing hair—often red or dark—portrayed with earthy sensuality rich in symbolism .

Meticulous Detail : Obsessive attention to clothing details, accessories, and landscapes, with an almost tactile rendering of fabrics—silk, velvet, lace, embroidery—painted with scientific precision .

Asymmetrical Gazes : A distinctive feature is the use of complex gazes in interactions between men and women, often looking in different directions, creating narrative and psychological tension .
