Jan van Eyck, 15th-century Flemish master

Jan van Eyck (c. 1390-1441) was one of the greatest painters of the early Northern Renaissance. It's even been claimed that he invented oil painting as we know it, though that's a bit much. In any event, he stood first among the Flemish masters who brought a new realism to European art, alongside Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and Peter Paul Rubens.

His most famous work is probably The Arnolfini Wedding , which uses light and shadow to portray three-dimensionality and perspective to a degree unprecedented in painting — and even included a selfie .
